Beyond the Myths: Key Facts Redefining Indonesian Biomass

This whitepaper serves as APREBI’s formal clarification against allegations of deforestation and “greenwashing,” asserting that Indonesia’s legitimate biomass industry is a key partner in the clean energy transition. The document argues that the industry’s primary feedstocks are not natural forests, but rather industrial/agricultural waste (like Palm Kernel Shells) and certified, legally-designated energy plantations (HTI). It debunks “greenwashing” claims by explaining the science of the biogenic carbon cycle, which makes sustainable biomass a carbon-neutral alternative that displaces fossil fuels. APREBI emphasizes its members’ commitment to mandatory certifications like SVLK and ISPO as proof of legality and sustainability, and outlines a path forward based on digital traceability, multi-stakeholder collaboration, and balancing domestic energy needs with global export demands to build a transparent and responsible industry. The issues surrounding biomass, sustainability, and Indonesia’s energy future are complex. To fully understand the data, the science, and APREBI’s formal commitments, we strongly encourage you to download the complete whitepaper. This document provides the detailed, point-by-point responses and verifiable data necessary for a comprehensive understanding.

Empowering Indonesia’s Renewable Future Through Sustainable Biomass

APREBI is the official industry association representing Indonesia’s biomass energy producers, exporters, and researchers.
We advocate for policies that promote sustainable biomass development, ensure responsible production, and strengthen Indonesia’s role in the global renewable energy market.

Vision:

“To position Indonesia as a world leader in sustainable biomass energy through collaboration, transparency, and innovation.”

Policy & Regulation Partnership

Working with government institutions to establish sustainable biomass standards and investment incentives.

Research & Innovation Hub

Collaborating with universities and research agencies (BRIN, ERIA) to develop clean conversion technologies.

Community & Sustainability Projects

Supporting rural livelihoods and local development through biomass-based energy initiatives.
APREBI’s commitment

Reliable Data. Strong Advocacy. Meaningful Collaboration

The three pillars of APREBI’s commitment to a sustainable biomass future. The mainstream biomass industry represented by APREBI is not based on destroying natural forests. Its foundation is the circular economy. This is APREBI’s commitment: To prove that responsible biomass isn’t the problem, but a critical part of the solution. It’s not a choice between energy and the environment; it’s a partnership for a sustainable, green future.

Commitments of APREBI

We Build
Trust And Commitments

Adherence to NDPE Principles
APREBI and its members fully endorse the principles of No Deforestation (committing to protect High Conservation Value and High Carbon Stock forests), No Peat (committing to no new developments on peatland), and No Exploitation (committing to respect human rights and obtain Free, Prior, and Informed Consent from local communities).
A Supply Chain Based on the Circular Economy
The association is committed to a sustainable supply chain founded on utilizing industrial wood waste (like sawdust and offcuts from factories) and agricultural residues (such as Palm Kernel Shells) as primary feedstocks, rather than sourcing from pristine natural forests.
Strict Compliance with Legal Certifications
APREBI members must adhere to robust mandatory national regulations to ensure legality and sustainability. This includes the SVLK (Timber Legality Verification System) for all wood-based feedstock and the ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) standard for biomass derived from the palm oil industry.
Zero-Tolerance Policy on Illegal Sourcing
The association unequivocally condemns any illegal logging for biomass production. APREBI has established a Zero-Tolerance Policy for illegal sourcing and is committed to working with the government and civil society to investigate and eradicate any illegal operations.
Commitment to Transparency and Traceability
APREBI is committed to transparency and accountability to counter greenwashing claims. This includes spearheading the development of a comprehensive, digital traceability system that can track biomass from its specific origin (plantation or mill) all the way to the end-user.
Active Multi-Stakeholder Collaboration
The association is committed to a collaborative approach, moving beyond a defensive posture. This includes actively engaging with all stakeholders—including NGOs, academic institutions, and government agencies—to foster constructive dialogue, improve practices, and build trust.
Implementing Strict Sustainability Standards
